Set in the 1990s, a missing-girl case forces three girls from very different backgrounds to make life-changing choices and reveals the joys and sorrows of several ordinary families. Su Lin grows up in poverty and is overlooked by her family, yet she continues studying and hopes to change her life through education. Her strong English earns her a chance to try out for the role of the Little Mermaid in a school production, but it also draws her into jealousy and conflict among her classmates. After a violent confrontation, she falls into an underground drainage pipe, leaving her fate unknown. As her disappearance becomes intertwined with an investigation involving female victims found in the city’s underground river, retired police officer Gu Hao and schoolgirl Jiang Ting refuse to stop searching for her. Between the city above and the tunnels below, truth, redemption, and hope gradually come to light.
