Fall for a Chinese romance, easiest first
Seven Chinese romance micro-dramas from seven channels, ranked by how soon episode 1 starts the story and how much the premise asks you to believe.

Su Yan’s fiancé cannot see the problem. So he slept with a few women while he was out; after ten years together, is she really ending it over that? Later, two men find her alone and offer to keep her company, and she tells them what the law says about indecent assault: up to fifteen days. A young man steps in and asks whether she agreed. She asks him whether he has a girlfriend. He hasn’t. “你现在有了” (You do now). By the end of the episode she is handing him her ex’s clothes, never worn, and asking whether 50,000 is enough.
That is the first episode of 满分恋人 (The One), and it is only fourth here. ShortFlix lists about 200 Chinese romances, and the stock scenes come back again and again: the money offered the morning after, the drugged night, the child a father never knew about, the rescuer who knows her when she does not know him.
We ranked seven, from seven channels and each on a different engine, by two things the script controls: how much of episode 1 passes before the engine starts, and how much the premise asks you to accept. Number one starts in episode 1 and asks almost nothing. We wanted the couple to be the point, which cost us Mango TV’s Beneath the Contract: its 13-minute first episode ends a marriage and settles scores with the in-laws.
1. My Security Guard Girlfriend
Chinese · MangoTV Short Play · 21 episodes, most four to six minutes · started 27 July 2023
This rich-poor romance starts at the rich man’s gate. Lu Yiyi guards a villa estate; the channel’s notes say she grew up in an orphanage and took the job to help it. In episode 1, after chasing a peeping tom through Area B, she stops a car with an unregistered plate. She is told who is in the car: Young Master Su. Then he can follow the rules too, she says, and the barrier stays down.
It is the opening of Meteor Garden, the poor girl who will not bow to the leader of the rich boys, moved from a school to a gatehouse. The notes ask one thing of you: that she got the job thanks to strength she was born with.
2. 湘东谣·戏影流光 (A Ballad of Xiangdong)
Chinese · Seven Grapefruit Theater · 30 episodes, most one to two minutes each · started 28 June 2025
The treasure in this romance is a room of shadow puppets. Lin Xiang goes home to the Xiangdong countryside to work in seclusion, and on the way Xiang Dong saves her from a near car accident. He knows who she is; she has no idea who he is.
The titles never name them: she is 姑娘 (gūniang), the girl, and he is 小伙 (xiǎohuǒ), the lad, and seven titles use 非遗 (fēiyí), intangible cultural heritage. Zhang Yimou’s To Live (1994) made shadow puppets the trade a ruined man lives by; here they keep two people meeting, and in episode 4 they meet rock music.
It asks almost nothing: a rescue, a charm that may lead her to whoever saved her as a child, a mother who questions her dream. It ranks second because the engine waits for episode 2’s hidden treasure and episode 3’s new apprentice.
3. When Fate Forgets to Lie
Chinese · FlickReels · 18 episodes, one to two minutes each · started 14 August 2025
In 72 seconds, a woman is told that her daughter’s case is urgent and that she has been booked in with the top specialist. Then she remembers who she was seven years ago: Chen Qingniao, a fat girl. In the flashback, someone jokes that her fat could be boiled down for oil, and a voice answers that it is only for fun, since he is going abroad soon. The channel’s notes say the doctor is the ex, she has a new name and a slimmer figure, he does not recognise her, and the girl is his.
Most second chances need both people to remember; this one needs him not to. Mango TV’s The Name in My Heart turns the device around, bringing the man back years later under a new name.
The ask is a doctor who cannot place the mother of his child, and the jokes about her weight are cruel on purpose. No episode has a title, but at a minute or so each, you won’t need a map.
4. The One
Chinese · WeTV (Tencent Video) · 25 episodes, five to ten minutes each · started 5 September 2026
Episode 1’s title names the engine in two pieces of slang: 年下 (nián xià), a romance in which the man is younger, and 奶狗 (nǎigǒu), literally a milk puppy, the sweet young man who chases his 姐姐 (jiějie), the older woman he calls big sister. Su Yan is a 30-year-old lawyer whose rule is to love herself eight parts in ten. Cheng Lin is 19, the boy she once helped in a juvenile detention centre. The 25th episode’s title does the sum (she gives two parts, he gives back full marks), and full marks, 满分, is half the Chinese title.
Tencent’s Please Love Me (2022) has the same morning after: a 28-year-old designer finds a 22-year-old model still in her flat and tells him to get lost. The difference is the 50,000.
The ask is the history: he was a boy in detention when they met, and some viewers will not get past that. Her backstory includes abuse by a mentor, and episode 9 is about a professor’s assault on a student.
5. 入室偷心 (Break In, Steal a Heart)
Chinese · 大馬猴短劇 (Damahou Drama) · 25 episodes, most one to two and a half minutes · started 8 June 2026
Episode 1 runs 48 seconds, the shortest first episode here, and the channel’s note for it describes a job: Jiang Yun, a university student, is sent to get close to Mr Liu, a rich businessman, and collect proof that he cheats. By episode 3, people are gossiping about the 18-year-old living in his home as a nanny.
入室 is half of the Chinese for burglary, and 偷心 is stealing a heart. Three titles call the affair a 棋局 (qíjú), a game of chess. It is the Xi Shi legend, the beauty sent to King Fuchai of Wu so he would neglect his kingdom, moved into a businessman’s house, with stock scenes added: parents who fake a heart attack to marry her to an older man (episode 17), then a fake boyfriend (episode 19).
It ranks fifth despite the fastest start: the romance begins as paid work, a student watching a man for money, and 25 episodes in, the notes have not said who sent her. The channel also posts a clip playlist under almost the same title; the link below has whole episodes.
6. 带崽嫁入豪门 (Marrying Into Money, Child in Tow)
Chinese · mansenshow · 80 episodes, finished, most one to two minutes each · started 26 September 2024
Lin Xiawei sells noodles to buy a home for Wu Hao, the man she thinks fathered her daughter. He did not. He tricked her into going to a hotel, where she slept with Sheng Yankai, who had been drugged. She had quadruplets; three were taken, and only the girl is left. Wu Hao cheats anyway and puts someone else’s name on the deed.
崽 (zǎi) is a cub, slang for a child. When Fate Forgets to Lie keeps a father from knowing his child; this one keeps a mother from knowing the father. She meets Sheng again by helping his lost grandfather, and once he learns the truth, he hides who he is and marries her.
Neither of them chose that night: he was drugged, and she was tricked. It ranks sixth on the premise alone, since episode 1 comes with no notes and the titles are numbers until the 80th, which announces the finale. Eighty episodes is also the most of any pick here.
7. Uncle Unknown
Chinese · PPeachStory · 12 episodes, finished, five to eight minutes each · started 4 October 2024
The Chinese title, 叔不知, is a pun: 殊不知 (little did he know) is an idiom, and 叔 means uncle. Lu Shiran, young master of the Lu family, runs into Qi Yi, the boyfriend who vanished on him, in a bar. By the restroom, the talk turns to who is pretending not to know whom, and to a room upstairs for the night. What he does not know, the channel’s notes say: Qi Yi is the young uncle he has never met.
PPeachStory makes its own BL (boys’ love) series, and this one comes from a novel by Wan Xizi. The Untamed (2019), also from a BL novel, had to present its heroes as soulmates rather than lovers; Uncle Unknown ends on a proposal in episode 12.
It ranks last because the taboo is the premise, and the channel’s own summary calls it one. And episode 1 is slow: most of its captions are the lyrics of two songs, and the reveal waits for episode 7, when, the title says, uncle and nephew learn who the other is. Episode 4’s title promises a three-day break-up, a reunion within three episodes and no 狗血 (gǒuxiě), dog’s blood, the slang for cheap melodrama.
PPeachStory’s current series, A Crown for Wolves, updates every Saturday, the channel says.
How we picked
Every series here is a romance made in Chinese, with its whole first episode on YouTube, and no two come from the same channel. We left out dubbed versions, series made with AI, teasers, re-uploads and clip channels. For four picks we read the first episode’s captions, in Chinese or in English subtitles; the other three have none we could read, so we went by their episode titles, the channels’ notes and the summaries on their ShortFlix pages. We did not count views. Episodes play from each creator’s own YouTube channel.
