Chinese micro-dramas let the heroine start over
A woman gets her twenties back, a reader wakes up as the villainess of a novel, and a pork seller in 1985 watches her fiancé come home with a woman he calls his wife.
At a wedding, Yueye’s old classmates remember that she never got her diploma and that she once chased the groom. Then she takes the stage to give her blessing, as the groom’s first girlfriend and the bride’s friend of more than ten years. She dated him for seven years, she tells the room, and in the end delivered him into her best friend’s arms. Her twenties went on this man, and now she has nothing. If she could do it all again, she would live differently. The next scene is a classroom. Report cards are out, and she is at the bottom again. That is the first episode of Back to Twenty, and it runs just under two and a half minutes.
Starting over is what Chinese micro-dramas do that others do not. More than one Chinese micro-drama in four on ShortFlix sends someone back into an earlier life, into another body or into another century. In our other eleven languages together, we count fewer than twenty. Around the do-overs, the series wear costume (palaces, ministers’ daughters) or modern dress (offices, rich families), with the 1980s as a rarer third. Much of it comes from companies: Tencent Video’s micro-drama channel (109 series) and the app FlickReels (140, on channels with English, Chinese and Spanish titles) post nearly half of the 512 Chinese micro-dramas we list.
We chose six from six channels, all made in Chinese, none dubbed or made with AI. That rule cost us the best title we read, in which a lazy girl in a 1970s village promises everyone meat every day: its channel, 蛋炒饭剧场 (Egg Fried Rice Theatre), says on its About page that it makes AI dramas. Read the route from the top.

Back to Twenty
Chinese · 魔女月野 (Yueye) · 36 episodes: the first 11 about two minutes each, the rest under a minute · started 13 April 2022
The Chinese title, 重返二十岁, reads the same as that of 20 Once Again, the 2015 remake of Korea’s Miss Granny, in which a woman of 70 leaves a photo studio in her twenty-year-old body. Yueye’s series turns that round: the film’s heroine stays in the present, and Yueye goes back to her own past. The channel belongs to Yueye (月野), and the heroine has her name.
Episode 3 is titled Yueye’s star-making plan: she meets someone who will one day be a big online star, and the family’s corner shop takes off. By episode 4 she is caught between Shen Yi, an older student she likes, and Xiao Wu, who likes her. Episode 11 brings her back to the present, where Xiao Wu seems to be marrying someone else. Stop there: the 25 uploads after it run under a minute, and several repeat earlier titles.
When We Meet Again
Chinese · Tencent Video (WeTV) · 24 episodes, about six to eleven minutes each · started 30 April 2024
A student finishes a novel and wishes its villainess, Lu Shuangshuang, a life in hell. Then she wakes up as Lu Shuangshuang, facing the crown prince, Mo Chengqian, who accuses her of drugging him. Notes in the captions spell out the bad news: she is the prime minister’s arrogant daughter, and the hero will one day wipe out her whole family. Other people who fall into books, she complains, get to be the heroine.
Her plan is to divorce the prince and fall for the second male lead, allowing three meetings from first sight to the bridal chamber. Episode 2’s title says the divorce request fails. Tencent Video aired a long-form drama on the same beat in 2020: in The Romance of Tiger and Rose, a screenwriter wakes inside her own script as the hated third princess, due to be killed by episode three. The episodes are long for a starter, but the first runs under six minutes and sets up everything, with English captions.

Ascension of the Rebellious Consort
Chinese · FlickReels · 12 episodes, one and a half to three minutes each · started 8 May 2025
No time machine here, only a palace. The channel’s notes call the heroine Beryl. The emperor favours her, and she bears a son. Imperial Concubine Li kills the child out of jealousy, and the emperor pardons Li because she is pregnant too. So Beryl pretends to be mad and goes to the cold palace, where out-of-favour consorts are kept, to learn from Xi, a consort of the previous emperor.
Empresses in the Palace (2011) has the same shape: Zhen Huan leaves the court for a temple and comes back, as Consort Xi, for revenge. Her road runs out of the palace; Beryl’s runs further in. The premise is a murdered baby, which some viewers will want to know first. For palace scheming in episodes under three minutes, start here.
80s Spicy Wife
Chinese · DramaFable · 63 episodes, finished, most of them one to two minutes · started 25 March 2026
It is 1985 in the small town of Nanhe, and Nan Qiao runs the pork stall alone so that her fiancé, Chen Fei, can try his luck in the city. The town expects a wedding. He comes home in a gleaming car, with a stylish woman he introduces as his wife. That is the channel’s own summary, and the rest of the title, 失忆老公求转正, says where it goes: an amnesiac husband asks to be made permanent, like a worker on probation.
The channel’s summary has no time travel in it: 1985 is simply where she lives. In Hi, Mom (2021), Jia Xiaoling lands in 1981 and tries to marry her young mother to a factory manager’s son, for a better life. Nan Qiao has to find hers after the marriage plan collapses, and by episode 30, the notes say, her amnesiac husband, President Gu, has turned clingy. The notes on the 63rd episode, billed as the grand finale, call her the Xishi of the meat stall, after the classical beauty. They also say Chen Fei only pays in that finale: a long wait if you came for revenge.

Those Days as a Woman
Chinese · Seven Grapefruit Theater · 14 episodes, one and a half to three and a half minutes each · started 11 April 2025
Beyond Periods, the Malayalam series in our creators guide, argues with a husband who treats his wife’s period as an act. This Chinese series moves the doubter into women’s bodies. The first episode of 成为女人的那几天 is titled for exactly that: a man decides period pain is fuss, and the next second he is feeling it. The notes name him Xiao Fang, and his soul passes through three women in turn, a colleague and his manager among them.
In episode 6 he swaps with his manager and finds her life worse than he imagined. In episode 8, a child is puzzled that Mum has forgotten what she said earlier, not knowing this Mum is someone else. Episode 9’s title includes a husband who cheats and hits. The last title has him understanding women and taking more responsibility, so the ending is no secret.

The Leopard Cat Scholar
Chinese · Mango TV · 20 episodes, about eight to eleven minutes each · started 23 January 2025
The Leopard Cat Scholar (狸猫书生) began as a single room in the sixth season of Great Escape, Mango TV’s escape-room show, and the channel posts it as 密逃首款衍生剧, the show’s first spin-off. At an academy in the hills, a poor student’s little sister sings a nursery rhyme: when bad men bully people, the cat demon eats them. Then Duan Sheng, an official’s son, stamps on the herbs the student picked for her. The notes say two scholars find the headmaster using the cat-demon legend to hide corruption.
Skip it first for two reasons. These are the longest episodes in this guide, and the titles promise deaths by tongue (episode 4), eyes and ears. If you came from the escape room, start here anyway.
The Leopard Cat Scholar’s second season, which brings the cat spirit and the scholar together in a modern university, is already up on ShortFlix.
How we picked
Every series here was made in Chinese, one per channel. We left out dubbed versions, series made with AI and teasers. We read the first episode’s captions for three of them, in Chinese or English as posted, and the channel’s own notes and episode titles for the other three. We did not count views. Episodes play from each creator’s own YouTube channel.
