A tea stall at half past nine
A guide to Bengali micro-dramas, from a job interview at a tea stall to a widower who will not leave his in-laws’ house.
It is about half past nine, and the office opens at ten. The tea seller asks the young woman at his stall whether she is waiting for someone. No, she says: she has an interview in that office today. He tells her the office is very big, and she is very early. Her father taught her, she explains, to arrive ten or fifteen minutes before any meeting, so that she is never late. (Half an hour is her father’s rule with a margin.) The first episode stops there, at 47 seconds.
The title tells you what comes next: চায়ের দোকানদার যখন মেয়েটির ইন্টারভিউ নিল অতঃপর, When the tea seller took the girl’s interview, and then. Bengali titles on ShortFlix often name the whole plot and hold back only the ending, and অতঃপর (and then) is the word that holds it back. ShortFlix lists 320 micro-dramas in Bengali, and 27 titles contain it, among them three of the four from Golpobaz, the channel that made this one. Many stories stay at home: বউ, the wife or bride, is in 45 titles, and the rest of the household turns up too, from the son-in-law to the maid and the guard.
We chose six series from six channels, each a story acted in dialogue, none dubbed or made with AI. That rule cost us ময়নার জীবনের গল্প (Moyna’s life story), in which a wife steams the hilsa with mustard herself, then watches her mother-in-law give the roe to her younger brother-in-law: its first episode is told by a narrator, not acted.
Start with the tea stall. Golpobaz tells it in 14 parts of 22 to 47 seconds, and if the title keeps its word, the man pouring the tea will be the one asking the questions. In Satyajit Ray’s Pratidwandi (1970), Siddhartha fails a job interview by naming the courage of the Vietnamese people, not the Moon landing, as the great event of the decade. The young woman at this stall gives her answer, on punctuality, to the tea seller’s small talk.
Then the son-in-law. Bijoy TV’s নির্লজ্জ একজন সৎ জামাই (A shameless, honest son-in-law) opens on a line about a man who builds a house on someone else’s land and lives in it, though he does not own it. His mother-in-law says it in plainer words: her daughter died three months ago, he is hanging on for the property, and no insult moves him. He calls her Amma and answers, “লজ্জা শরম তো আছে, তয় বউ নাই” (I have shame all right; it’s a wife I don’t have). Bengali has a word for a man who lives in his wife’s parents’ house, ঘরজামাই, and it is rarely a compliment. This one says he stays for his wife’s memories. The episode runs 39 seconds, and the other ten will have to show whether he means it.
Then the maid, from নীল-চিরকুট (Nil Chirkut), whose 30 series on ShortFlix make it the busiest channel here. Her work is done and she wants to go home: today a groom’s family is coming to see her daughter, and without her there the match may fall through. She has already worked on her day off without saying no. Her employer, the wife of the house, tells her to mind the baby first, says she is going to the cinema tonight, and adds that people like the maid need to be shown their place. The title promises abuse, and spells নির্যাতন (abuse) with a 3 in the middle.
Start with these three
When the tea seller took the interview
Bengali · Golpobaz · 14 episodes, 22 to 47 seconds each · started 1 February 2025
Golpobaz describes itself as a production company and advertising agency, and two of its three other titles keep the same shape: one asks why an owner threw away the invitation to his guard’s sister’s wedding.
A shameless, honest son-in-law
Bengali · Bijoy TV (বিজয় টিভি) · 11 episodes, under a minute each · started 6 October 2025
Watch it if you like a family quarrel with grief under it. If you need to know early who is in the right, skip it: episode 1 does not settle it.
The maid who asked for leave
Bengali · Nil Chirkut (নীল-চিরকুট ツ) · 14 episodes, about 40 seconds each · started 1 March 2024
Nothing in episode 1 softens the employer, so leave this one for a night when you want to be angry on someone’s behalf. Nil Chirkut’s other titles stay in the same kind of house: in one, a maid makes the family’s gold jewellery disappear; in another, a wife runs off with her in-laws’ jewellery and cash.
Three more
The millionaire’s daughter, the tea seller’s wife
Bengali · RMS Motivation · 12 episodes, about a minute each · started 25 April 2024
The second tea stall in this guide gets a runaway. A young woman asks the tea seller for something to eat, anything he has, and he offers cake and bread. He can tell by looking at her that she has run away from a wedding. She has: the groom has plenty of money, she says, but he is horrible to look at and an addict as well, and money is no reason to marry a man. Why not just tell her family? She skips that question. The title, কোটিপতির মেয়ে চা ওয়ালার বউ, tells you where she ends up.
Watch it straight after Golpobaz’s series: two young women at two tea stalls, one there to be early and one there to escape. RMS Motivation describes itself as a Bangladeshi motivational speaker; its other titles include ভাংরীওয়ালা থেকে বিসিএস ক্যাডার (From scrap dealer to civil servant).
Why did the woman pretend to be hurt?
Bengali · Barisha Tv · 11 episodes, about 45 seconds each · started 15 August 2024
This guide’s second job candidate does not reach his interview in episode 1. A woman whose car has overturned lies on her back and begs a passing young man to take her to hospital and to bring her some water. Going for the water, he finds money: about a lakh of taka, he guesses. He is on his way to an interview, he reasons aloud, and the job may come or it may not; this money could do a lot, and what does he gain by saving her?
The title asks why the woman put on a show of lying flat after the crash, so this looks like a test, and in episode 1 he is leaning toward the wrong answer. Aesop’s honest woodcutter refuses the golden axe and is given it anyway; his greedy neighbour claims one and loses his own axe as well. So far, this young man sounds like the neighbour. Four of Barisha Tv’s six titles are questions, among them why a guard punctured his madam’s tyre.
Bondhutto (Friendship)
Bengali · Tanu Lipi Official · 12 episodes, about a minute each · started 20 September 2024
This is the one series here with no job or fortune at stake in its first episode. A teacher brings a new girl into class, and her classmates decide before she sits down that a face without a smile means pride. One vows never to speak to her. Another prays to Thakur that the new girl is not seated beside her, while a third hopes she is, so that she can curse the girl’s whole clan (the idiom borrows the name of a puja). The teacher seats her by Ankita, who will not speak first in case she is snubbed, and the new girl, finding Ankita’s face turned away, tells the teacher she will not sit there.
Tanu Lipi Official is two sisters who make Bengali comedy, by their own account. Their Bengali is the standard kind; RMS Motivation’s tea seller, by contrast, says খাইবেন where they would say খাবেন (will you eat).
Tanu Lipi Official’s প্রিন্সিপালের নাতনি (The principal’s granddaughter) brings another new girl to school, and it has a second season.
How we picked
Every series here was made in Bengali and is told in acted dialogue. We left out dubbed versions, series made with AI, teasers, re-uploads, compilations of unrelated short films and stories read by a narrator, took one series per channel, and read each first episode’s captions in Bengali. We did not count views. Episodes play from each creator’s own YouTube channel.
