A jethani stays a jethani
Six Hindi comedy micro-dramas and the characters they run on, from a nanad who coaches her mother to a phupha insulted with rasgullas.
The weather is pleasant, and the younger brother of the house wants tea and pakoras. He asks his bhabhi, his elder brother’s wife. She tells him to ask his own wife, who spends all day in her room on her phone. His wife has an answer: she uploads videos to Facebook and Instagram, she is an influencer, she will earn lakhs of rupees, and anyway, Facebook is where she found her husband. Fine, says the elder sister-in-law, then go and fry pakoras for your Facebook husband. That is the first episode of Jethani Devrani, and it runs exactly a minute.
A jethani and a devrani are the wives of an elder and a younger brother, and Hindi comedy sets them against each other over one kitchen. A lot of the Hindi comedy on ShortFlix is built this way: characters the viewer already knows, dropped into a new situation each series. On Wonder Shorts, a man called Gadhadiya becomes a beggar in one series, gets divorced in another and is murdered in a third. Shorts Break, from our creators guide, has kept Sheela Didi the maid going for more than a hundred episodes.
ShortFlix lists 80 Hindi micro-dramas that are comedies. We chose six, each from a different channel and each made by the channel that posts it, and read every first episode in Hindi. That rule left out When You Live Alone With Your Roomies!!, whose own notes send viewers to the channel Alright! for the web series it comes from. The list starts inside the joint family and works outward.
The jethani: Jethani Devrani

Every episode is a single minute-long round of the fight. The angle is the old order against the phone: the jethani runs the kitchen, and the devrani is busy on Facebook. The channel’s own titles carry the plot. In episode 12 the devrani gets a job, episode 15 reminds her that a jethani stays a jethani, and episode 16 wants to know who ate the paneer.
Priyankaa Tyagi describes herself as a former air hostess from Bareilly, now settled in Mumbai. Iam Neha, whose nanad comes next, made the same pair in three-minute episodes as Devrani ki Jasoosi (The devrani’s spying). Nothing in the titles says the fight ever ends.
The nanad: Nanad ka Pardafash

A nanad is the husband’s sister, and the title, नन्द का पर्दाफाश, promises to expose one. In episode 1, three women of the house book a rickshaw to buy vegetables, and Amma calls them a trinity of gossips. The nanad stays home and orders broccoli and beans. One sister-in-law defends her bag, from the grocery shop back home and six years in service, and is told that people from backward places know nothing of fashion.
Then, with her mother, the nanad passes on a lesson she learned from her own nanad: “मुंह से मीठा बोलो और अंदर-अंदर काट दो” (Speak sweetly, and cut from the inside). By episode 4, the channel’s notes say, a bhabhi is phoning the nanad’s in-laws directly, and in episode 10 the bhabhis get hold of a recording of her. Those two episodes run past nine minutes each, so keep them for an evening. Iam Neha says its family content should feel like your own home. Here, that is a home where someone is always listening.
The phupha: Biwi ki Naukri

What has upset Phupha ji? A phupha is the husband of the father’s sister, and Hindi wedding comedy has made him the relative who takes offence. In the first episode of बीवी की नौकरी (The wife’s job), the family has just been to see a prospective bride, and he lists his grievances. The girl explained to him the difference between sugar-free and free sugar. Does he look like a donkey? She and her father shamed him by pressing rasgulla after rasgulla on him. Within 32 seconds, the argument has moved on to whether this wedding will happen at all.
The catch is the length of the run: 199 episodes, each titled only with the series name, so there is no skipping ahead to the wife or her job. Take it in half-minute bites and stop when you like.
The wife with a request: Pakhandi Lugai

Shorts Break’s Husband vs Wife opens on the question every husband in comedy answers wrong. Here the husband gives the right answer, and the title, पाखंडी लुगाई (the fraud wife; lugai is a country word for wife), suggests that was his mistake. Phoolwati wakes the man she calls Tinku ke papa, Tinku’s father, with a request. Will he promise not to refuse? He tells her to ask with an open heart. She wants money for makeup from the market, because, she says, her skin is getting darker.
That is 37 seconds, and no episode runs past 49. Trisha Comedy titles every part as Rajasthani comedy, and this is its only series on ShortFlix. Phoolwati’s reason treats darker skin as a problem to fix, and some viewers will stop there.
The father: Agyaatvaas

In the Mahabharata, the Pandavas lose a game of dice and are sentenced to twelve years in the forest and a thirteenth in hiding, the agyaatvaas of this title. The father in अज्ञातवास is harsher. He summons his wicked son, who greets him as pitashri, revered father, and, without naming the crime, banishes him from the palace for twelve years in the forest, three or four years in hiding, and barefoot. The son replies that he will manage without his father. No problem, he adds, in English, and the last line is about a love story full of pain.
That gap, between the father’s epic Hindi and the son’s two words of English, is the joke. Rakiyo Goriyo titles its work as Marwari comedy, and its Aaj ki Mahabharat puts two princes behind a chariot that has run out of diesel. The first episode is a sentence and a reply, so give it two or three before you decide.
The madam: Modern Mam in Sarkari School

The class says good morning, and the teacher asks whether they had Sonu Nigam for breakfast. She is the modern madam at a government school, teaching in English with a Hindi gloss: a bee, which is to say a madhumakkhi, gives honey, and the goat, the bakri, earns a very good. Then she asks what the buffalo gives, the moti bhains, and the answer comes back at her. The episode is called Moti Bhains (fat buffalo), and you can guess who the class means.
Later titles include Madam Jawab Do (Madam, answer), Tit For Tat and Sikandar India Kyu Aaya (why did Alexander come to India). We left out dubbed versions, series made with AI, teasers, re-uploads, clips cut from longer shows and stories read by a narrator, and Shorts Break, whose four series are in our creators guide. We read each first episode’s captions in Hindi. We did not count views. Episodes play from each creator’s own YouTube channel.
