When the day needs a laugh
Comedy micro-dramas in seven languages, from a Bengali groom with two-day-old sweets to an Iraqi deputy in his sheikh’s chair.
The sweets cost 300 taka a kilo, and the customer bargains until the shopkeeper offers him the two-day-old ones at 150. He takes them. Asked why he is taking stale sweets to meet a prospective bride, he says he is not a miser but thrifty: why spend on a girl he has not chosen yet? That is the start of Kipta Jamai, a Bengali comedy. Before its three minutes are up, the bride’s family is smelling the sweets.
A melodrama hooks you with a secret; a comedy hooks you with a flaw. ShortFlix lists 237 comedy micro-dramas, more than half in Hindi and Telugu. We chose eight, from eight channels in seven languages, and grouped them by mood: family embarrassments, trouble at work, and premises that make no sense. We passed on Namdev Chavan’s Marathi series about his wife, Pramila: in each first episode he tells the camera which prank he will play on her, and a prank is not a story.
The stock scenes need no explaining: the visit to see a bride, the phone call in which someone lies about where he is, the rent two months late, the boss who leaves town. Several first episodes end on a punchline, not a cliffhanger, which makes them easy to stop.
Family embarrassments
Kipta Jamai (The Miser Son-in-Law)
Bengali · Bangla Natok 551 · 11 episodes, about three minutes each · started 9 July 2026
The title, কিপ্টা জামাই, promises a stingy son-in-law; in episode 1 he is only a man on his way to see a bride. In Til Wali Ladaki, from our guide to Tamil, Hindi and Telugu micro-dramas, a match is fixed after one look at a mole. Here the bride’s family judges the groom by his gifts, out loud: three maltas, a kind of orange, which one person could eat alone, and a papaya, the one gift that might pass.
The bride has her own plan. Every boy who comes to see her vanishes afterwards, so she will marry this one, whatever he is like. The channel’s notes repeat one paragraph for every episode, so one man’s thrift has to carry ten more episodes without a map.
Dasappa Charitham
Malayalam · SVARAM Productions · 14 episodes, two to three minutes each · started 27 October 2025
Dasappan has come to borrow money, but first he gives a lecture. Rajesh’s whole family is on their phones, so Dasappan rings Rajesh, who says he is at a meeting in Kottayam. Dasappan is in the room. A family that never looks up, he warns, could be robbed. Then the point: he needs 2,500 rupees. What about his credit card? A card, Dasappan explains, has to be paid back. Rajesh agrees that it does.
The episode is called Mobile Mania, and the titles that follow read like a week of Kerala news: a street-dog lover, an election, an extra charge for gas delivery, a digital arrest (the phone scam in which callers pose as officials). The titles suggest each episode stands alone: good for one joke at a time, no use if you want a story that builds.
Trouble at work
Girlie Pops
Hindi · FilterCopy Shorts · 18 episodes, one to two minutes each · started 4 December 2025
Four days of work, half a day to do it in, and peanuts at appraisal time: one of the two flatmates in Girlie Pops has had enough of making reels from her clients’ lousy ideas. Reels for her own profile, she says, would make her a crorepati (worth ten million rupees) in a snap. Her mother, on the phone, is keener still: quit, come home, take a road trip, make reels every day. And who would run the mother’s hospital? They will manage.
Maybelline New York presents the series, and the titles move between dating and influencer work (Benching is an art, Just influencer things). Skip it if you want a plot: episode 1 fits a job, a mother and a break-up into 85 seconds.
Abu Saber and Abu Sarbhan
Arabic (Iraqi) · Yawmiyat Laflouf · 23 episodes, two to three and a half minutes each · started 24 September 2026
In the Thousand and One Nights, Harun al-Rashid lets Abu al-Hasan wake up as caliph for a day. ابو صابر وابو سربحان has the same premise, except that nobody grants Abu Saber anything. Sheikh Jabbar goes away on business and asks him to mind the madhif, the guest hall where a sheikh hears quarrels. Abu Saber hears a promotion. Shaalan brings him the sheikh’s clothes; when Laflouf points out that Jabbar never made him sheikh, Abu Saber answers that a man understands some things from a hint.
Visitors arrive about money Abu Sarbhan has owed for months, a small matter, they say. Abu Saber is confident: “احكي الصغيره نخلصها قبل لا تبرد الاستكانه” (Tell me the small one; we’ll settle it before the tea glass cools). Then word comes of men on the road from the next village, about a bigger matter. The Iraqi dialect is hard going if you know only formal Arabic, and the episode notes are shop adverts.
Jai Balayya
Telugu · New Era Tales · 33 episodes, under two minutes each · started 6 July 2025
The owner of a paying-guest house in Hyderabad hears someone calling aunty and wonders whether beggars have changed their greeting. It is her three tenants, two months behind on rent, asking for breakfast an hour before lunch. They are not jobless for lack of jobs, one explains: goats graze every day, but lions hunt only when hungry. Pay this month, she says, or your bags go out on the road, and the lions become village lions (in Telugu, a joke name for stray dogs). Not while Balayya stands behind them, they reply.
Balayya is the film star Nandamuri Balakrishna, whose films include Simha (2010), and the boys call themselves Simhalu, lions. By episode 10, the notes say, they hand an interviewer one résumé between three, and in episode 19 they find that the office boy earns more than they do. The Balayya jokes land best if you know the films.
Premises that make no sense
Miss Captain
Chinese, English subtitles · WeTV (Tencent Video) · 24 episodes, three to seven minutes each · started 12 September 2022
Zhong Dahai has just forced overtime in the college basketball final with a buzzer shot, and winning is his father’s dream too. After a bath, he is asking where his pectorals went while his teammates ask who this girl is.
In the Butterfly Lovers, Zhu Yingtai dresses as a boy to study, and her classmate Liang Shanbo never guesses. Miss Captain turns that premise around: Dahai, now a girl, has to hide who he was from his best friend, Lu Xingqi. By episode 5’s title she has moved into the girls’ dormitory, and episode 14’s gives away the first kiss, so watch for the gags, not the ending. Expect long episodes: the first runs over five minutes, the twelfth past seven.
Guilty ‘Til Innocent
English · Mikaela Happas · 11 episodes, one to two and a half minutes each · started 15 July 2026
How little evidence does a conspiracy need? Emma admits, under pressure, that Carlos is kind of cute, and her questioners have their case. Carlos, they decide, is an alias for Esteban Delgado, a right-hand man posing as a wimpy high-school boy, and Emma Whitlock is Diamond De Luca, drug lord of something called BMA. Emma is not sure whether to take that as a compliment.
Mikaela Happas, from our creators guide, writes, directs, films and edits the series and plays every part, so the suspect and the questioners are the same person. The jokes are adult; keep it away from children.
Abu Saber and Abu Sarbhan, the newest series here, reached 23 episodes in less than three weeks.
How we picked
Every series here is a comedy in its original language, posted by the channel that made or released it. We left out dubbed versions, series made with AI, teasers, re-uploads, prank videos and stories read by a narrator. We read each first episode’s captions in the original language (for Miss Captain, the channel’s English subtitles), then the episode titles and notes. We did not count views. Episodes play from each creator’s own YouTube channel.
