Which clause breaks first?
Seven contract-marriage micro-dramas in English, Spanish and Chinese, in order of what the deal covers: a day at the notary, a green card, a loan, a sister’s heart, a year, a murder and a secret.
Before Gu Zhenzhen agrees to marry Lu Yunchen, she wants to know which organ he is after. Her corneas? A kidney? Neither. He needs an actress to play his wife for his grandmother, and will pay her debts and her sister’s heart operation. The terms: three years, no physical relationship, no meddling in each other’s work. She adds a clause of her own. The money is a loan, she will repay it over 30 years, and the acting counts as interest. By the end of the first episode of Beyond Romance, the calendar has reached the contract’s last day.
That is a contract marriage in small: two people marry on terms, and the series waits for one to give way. ShortFlix lists 89 contract-marriage micro-dramas, 53 of them in Chinese. We chose seven whose first episode, or whose channel’s notes, says what the deal covers, and ordered them by that: paperwork first (an inheritance, a green card), then money, family, a life, a death and, last, a secret.
That rule cost us Quick TV’s Married by Mistake Saved by Love, and with it a Hindi pick. Its first episode is a wedding-day row over 50 lakh rupees (5 million) of Radhika’s savings, which the groom lost on shares, and it ends before anyone names a term.
Le propone a una 1ndigente matrimonio por una extraña razón
Spanish · Linis Florez · 15 episodes so far, a minute each · started 8 November 2023
“Solo tendrás que ser mi esposa por un día” (you will only have to be my wife for one day). He has just told a homeless woman to get up, because her life has changed, and shown her the money. The title means He proposes marriage to a homeless woman for a strange reason, and the reason comes within the minute: he must marry her for real, at a notary, to claim an inheritance, then divorce. The fee is 3,000 and a change of clothes, for some Hollywood-style acting.
Pretty Woman put the same number, 3,000 dollars, on a week with Vivian. Here it buys one day, and the day is the first clause in doubt: by his own plan, the divorce waits until he has the inheritance. He also calls her grubby while warning her not to get her hopes up, so skip it if an insulting groom spoils the romance.
Mommy by Day, CEO’s Wife by Night
English · FlickReels · 12 episodes so far, about one and a half to two and a half minutes each · started 4 June 2025
Five hundred dollars on one side of the aisle, 300,000 on the other. Jessica’s ex, a cheat, warns that the divorce will send her back to Ireland and cost her son, Kimi, his school in New York. But for 500 dollars, a marriage agency has found her a husband to sort out her green card, and the wedding is in half an hour. Elsewhere, a CEO hears that the bride found for him wants 300,000. Fine, he says.
At the wedding, the man to look for wears a black suit and a blue tie. On the CEO’s side, someone decides that Jessica seems to be the bride; her ex guesses that the groom is a mechanic who borrowed his clients’ cars. So the first clause to fail is the one nobody wrote down: who is marrying whom. Green Card (1990) built a comedy on the same paperwork, but there both sides knew whom they married. The notes promise that the CEO, Ryan, will learn Kimi may be his son.
From Fast Food to First Lady
English · FlexTV · 14 episodes so far: the first runs 16 and a half minutes, most of the rest six to eight, and the last two over an hour each · started 3 November 2024
Here the bride writes the terms and the groom lies about his job. Claire owes a lender 120,000 plus interest, her mother is too ill to wake, and the lender will clear the debt if she spends a night with a rich client. She walks into the wrong hotel suite, the president’s, and later saves him twice. Asked how he can thank her, she proposes a temporary marriage, so that nobody can sell her, and promises to repay her loan herself. He says he is only the president’s double, and his secret job rules out a wedding. She gets a room of her own.
In Dave (1993), a look-alike stands in for the president; here the president plays his own stand-in. The separate rooms last until Claire’s first shower, when she twists an ankle and he comes in. Be warned: the lender’s men come back, and the episode ends with Claire held captive. Impatient viewers get the whole set-up in one long episode; fans of two-minute episodes should look elsewhere.
Beyond Romance
Chinese · WeTV · 23 episodes so far, eight to fifteen minutes each · started 16 May 2023
Who is this contract for? Lu Yunchen’s grandmother, who has Alzheimer’s and believes her grandson has married his first love. That first love, Xu Muyin, went abroad to study acting, and rumour says Lu is waiting three years for her: the length of the deal. Gu Zhenzhen spends the rest of episode 1 massaging the grandmother’s shoulders and counting the days.
The clause that breaks first is the end date: the title of episode 2 has Lu lose his memory and the fake wife become true love. A Love Journal, from the same channel, has a bride who refuses three houses and a tenth of his savings; this one turns his money into a 30-year loan. The cost is length: episode 1 runs over 12 minutes.
那年冬至 (That Year’s Winter Solstice)
Chinese · FlickReels-精彩短劇 · 11 episodes so far, under a minute each · started 19 March 2026
FlickReels posts this story on three channels and gives the couple different names on each. On its Chinese channel they are Nan Zhaoning and Jing Shuo, the disabled second son of the Jing family, who marry in a hurry on the winter solstice. On the wedding night, his first words to her are that he plans to die in a year. She decides to enjoy the year, and perhaps have a beautiful child.
So the term is the groom’s own deadline, the darkest clause here and the one the notes promise will break. A man’s plan to end his life is the premise, played as romance. Me Before You (2016) gave its hero six months and a carer; FlickReels’ Spanish channel calls its version El próximo solsticio: Suiza, The Next Solstice: Switzerland.
有秘密的她 (She Has a Secret)
Chinese · MangoTV Short Play · 20 episodes so far, about nine to ten minutes each · started 30 December 2023
The first episode moves from a wedding vow to the groom’s funeral. An Xuehu promises Yuan Qiangwei that he will protect her until death parts them. Then his brother, An Zichen, thanks the mourners, tells their father, mute since a heart attack, that the company is his, and asks the widow when they will marry. Her price is a video that she believes shows An Xuehu killing her sister. Zichen keeps it in his safe, and his offer is a second contract: marry me, and it is yours.
The channel’s notes explain the first. Yuan, a professional boxer, married An Xuehu because clues made him the prime suspect in her sister’s death, a word the notes put in quotation marks. So this contract covers a murder inquiry, and the first clause to break is the suspicion: the notes say the killer is someone else, and the suspect has loved her for years. Claudius in Hamlet killed his brother and married the widow; Zichen holds his brother’s funeral and proposes inside one episode. Ten-minute episodes suit thriller fans with an evening free.
His Love Was A Lie
English · DramaBox · 57 episodes so far, most of them one to two minutes · started 10 December 2025
What if only one of you knew it was a contract? Charlotte has been married to August for two years, and he has never touched her. In episode 1 she tries once more, he shouts at her to stop, and she asks whether she has to beg, or bleed. She tells Blake, who calls her baby sis and has ten men waiting in Paris, that she wants a divorce. The reason: August loves his stepsister, Tessa Whitmore.
This is Beyond Romance turned inside out. There both sides set the terms; here only August knew the marriage was a cover, and the clause that breaks first is Charlotte’s patience, inside one episode. She tells the stepsister the truth and leaves; the regret, over 57 episodes, is his. Start here if you enjoy watching a man lose slowly.
For more of the winter-solstice story, FlickReels’ English channel has 25 episodes of it as Light in Winter, against the Chinese channel’s 11.
How we picked
Every pick is a micro-drama whose first episode or channel notes spell out the terms of a marriage. We read each first episode’s captions (English subtitles for Beyond Romance and 有秘密的她), and, for 那年冬至, FlickReels’ notes on its English version. We left out dubbed versions, series made with AI, teasers and re-uploads, and took one series per channel. Channels named FlickReels post 33 of the 89, so it appears twice. Two contract marriages were in earlier lists: Zawaj al-Maslaha, in Arabic, and The Arranged Marriage from Inkitt’s CandyJar. We did not count views. Episodes play from each creator’s own YouTube channel.
