Revenge that plans ahead instead of slapping back

Seven revenge micro-dramas where the lead does the plotting, from a wife who has dreamed her own murder to a reunion punchline sent back to 2006 with a list.

The roses are poisonous, and they are meant for her. In the dream Ran Shu keeps having, her husband, Zhang Zeyi, plans for them both to die on his 30th birthday, so that their love never withers. Her dreams come true, and she has never escaped this one. But she has found a moment, later on, when the ending can still change. So in the first episode of The Fatal Letter she does not pack a bag. She calls on a famous writer, Gu Yibai, whose adopted sister, Ruyue, grew up with Ran Shu in an orphanage and disabled her to win a place with a rich family.

That is revenge as a plan, the only kind on this list: revenge the lead plans and carries out, not revenge that fate delivers. The rule cost us His Wife Left Him for a Guard, but Karma Sent a Manager, a Spanish series whose husband answers a rival’s cash by promising to work harder, while the title hands the payback to karma. The seven come from seven channels in four languages.

The Fatal Letter

Chinese · WeTV (Tencent Video) · 24 episodes, six to ten minutes each · started 5 December 2023

The heroine of The Fatal Letter (致命来信) cannot change what happens. What she can choose is who stands next to her husband when it does.

Episode 1 sets the trap in plain sight. One morning, Zeyi frets that Ran Shu (Lu Yanqi) looks pale and offers to fetch her hot milk. Her voice-over, in the same scene, promises to be rid of him for good, in her own way. Later in the episode Ruyue, now a celebrity, offers Zeyi a photo shoot and tells Ran Shu she does not deserve him. Ran Shu has dreamed what that husband does to the woman he loves. She lets her sister have him.

In the Korean drama While You Were Sleeping, Nam Hong-joo dreams of disasters and spends the series trying to stop them. Ran Shu has the same gift and the opposite use for it: she aims the disaster.

Later titles confirm that the plan is the plot. Episode 9 asks whether it is all part of her plan, and by episode 18 Gu Yibai has worked out that it was. The titles also show the price. In episode 22 she uses her husband against her sister, and in episode 24 she turns herself in. That last title is the best argument for starting here: this revenge costs the avenger, and she pays.

Two warnings: the episodes run six to ten minutes, the longest here, and episode 1 opens on the husband’s violence, in the dream. Skip it if you want revenge without domestic abuse.

The other six plans

Each of the others bends the plan its own way: a new name, a fake apology, a list, a tantrum, a son’s grudge, and the victim’s view.

Embroidery Hostess

Chinese · MangoTV Short Play · 20 episodes, about five minutes each · started 3 June 2022

Chinese has an idiom for patient revenge: 卧薪尝胆, sleeping on brushwood and tasting gall, after King Goujian of Yue, who kept a defeat fresh that way until he could avenge it. MangoTV’s description of Embroidery Hostess (刺绣俏掌柜) uses it for Dong Zhiyu. Her husband, Xia Yu’ang, threw her out, and Hou Yifei, who wanted him, ruined her fingers and her face.

Episode 1 skips most of the gall. At an embroidery contest, the prize has just gone to Madam Hou of the Xia house when someone calls a halt: a newcomer’s mandarin ducks, the old emblem of a faithful couple, are better. She gives her name as Mei Zhi. She comes back through the one craft her ruined fingers should have ended, and by episode 7, the titles say, she is turning husband and wife against each other. Five-minute episodes make this the slow road, which suits the idiom.

Badla

Here the slap opens the story, and the plan belongs to the man who earned it. A young man orders two cups of tea, tells a woman she has won his heart and touches her. She warns him she will break his hand if he tries it again, and his friend reports that she slapped him and walked off. He promises an answer. The next time she sees him, he has come to apologise.

Badla means revenge, and the notes on later episodes explain the apology: badla wala pyar (revenge love) from episode 4, a wedding born of a conspiracy in episode 10, fake love in episode 18. It is the one series here whose revenge answers a slap the avenger deserved, and that will put many viewers off; others will find a one-minute melodrama run on its villain’s plan.

Reborn for the Crown

Twenty years after graduation, Mia is still the punchline. At the reunion, Jessica Hart, prom queen of 2006 and now Mia’s boss, asks why she is wallowing on the floor like a little piggy, then tells her to put Jessica’s name on Mia’s gene-editing idea. Connor Oliver, the prom king Mia has had a crush on for 20 years, says he came back for her.

Peggy Sue Got Married sent its heroine from her 25th reunion back to senior year. Mia goes back to 2006 with a revenge list: by the note on episode 3 she is ticking off every item, and by episode 7 she is running for prom queen. The stakes are the smallest here, a crown and a crush, and so is the cruelty. The note on episode 12 promises a bold move, not an ending.

The Chinese title, 万人嫌真千金靠发癫在豪门杀疯了, says the real heiress everyone despises tears through a rich family by 发癫 (fā diān), a word for going off the rails. The madness is the method. Thrown out and blamed when a gemstone necklace goes missing, she comes back, in DramaFable’s telling, as someone new. Episode 1 is titled Accused of Theft? True Heiress Fights Back!

Ran Shu hides her plan behind a cup of hot milk; this heiress makes hers loud. DramaFable also posted Su Wan’s comeback, from our list of finished series, and this is the same pleasure with the volume up. Episode 20 is billed as the grand finale.

The avenger here was not even there. The Bengali title, মেয়েটি তার বসের বাবার সাথে খারাপ ব্যাবহার করায় বস যেভেবে শিক্ষা দিলো, tells the whole story: how the boss taught a lesson to the young woman who was rude to his father. Episode 1, all 39 seconds of it, is the rudeness. Her car meets an older man’s battered motorbike. He says she came down the wrong side; she answers that whatever road she takes is the right road, for her and her car, and demands money for the scratch. She calls him তুই (tui) throughout, the form of address Bengali keeps for close friends, family and underlings, and an insult to an older stranger.

The title gives the son’s plan away, so the pleasure is in watching her dig. These are the shortest episodes on the list.

The last plan is told by its target. Lillian and Sebastian have loved each other for four years, and on their wedding day her father, drunk, presses the gas instead of the brake and kills Sebastian’s parents. Sebastian has her parents jailed and makes Lillian a promise: “you will watch every last second as I burn your life to the ground.”

He keeps it. Her parents are driven to suicide in prison, Lillian is locked away, and five years later she learns she has a week to live. The title tells you how the plan ends for him. DramaBox runs the same set-up in My World Ends with You, where a son sends the daughter of the doctor he blames for his father’s death to a mental hospital. Skip both if you would rather not see a man torment a woman for what her parent did.

Fourteen revenge micro-dramas on ShortFlix have started on YouTube since 1 September, eight of them Chinese, so a sequel will not be short of plans.

How we picked

Every series here is a micro-drama in which one of the leads plans the revenge and carries it out. We took one series per channel and left out dubbed versions, series made with AI, teasers, re-uploads and stories read by a narrator. Leaving out only the dubbed, AI-made and teaser series, ShortFlix lists 225 revenge micro-dramas in ten languages, 137 of them Chinese. We read each first episode’s captions (English subtitles for The Fatal Letter and Embroidery Hostess) or, for The Unhinged True Heiress, DramaFable’s own notes. We did not count views. Episodes play from each creator’s own YouTube channel.

Sources: the premises of While You Were Sleeping and Peggy Sue Got Married, the story of Goujian, the mandarin duck as a symbol of fidelity and the pronoun tui from Bengali grammar, all from Wikipedia; 发癫 from Wiktionary.
